Hull Compact was formed to create links between schools and businesses. We started in 1988, working with eight secondary schools and 33 companies. The scheme grew quickly and by 2010 13 secondary schools, along with one special schools and four colleges are still working with Hull Compact.
Successes
Between 1989 and 1998 we saw an improvement in pupils achieving their goals, from 40% to 60%. In 2000 there was some decline because pupils in years 10 and 11 were required to achieve their Compact goals for a longer period than previously. Remarkably, the number of pupils staying on in full time education in Hull has risen from 18% in 1988 to 69% in 2004.
Around 25,000 students in years 10 and 11 have taken part in the scheme. More than half have received Compact Graduate Certificates and many have gone on to college and later university, helped by the award scheme.
Our structure
Hull Compact is overseen by a board of governors who have senior roles in local education and business. The board is chaired by Mr Tony Clark and administered by the director, Mr David Bull.
We are a registered company (number 2339437) and a registered charity (number 702186).
Funding
From the start, Reckitt and Colman (now Reckitt Benckiser) have given us strong support. They provided the major funding, along with three other companies, and gave us accommodation and services in the early days. Industry and Commerce together with other Charities continue to provide the funding, allowing us to continue to provide awards and bursaries.
Since 1989 Compact has awarded grants to school leavers and since 1998, university bursaries to needy college learners. In 2005, 556 leavers received Achievement Awards and 12 students received University Bursaries. The total value of Awards in 2005 was over £62,000 while since 1989, Compact’s sponsors have provided over £1.5 million to help motivate and support Hull youngsters.
