Guide for teachers and tutors

Compact goals have been designed by business people and teachers to help pupils to work harder and achieve more in their studies and to prepare better for further education, training and the world of work.

To become Compact graduates, each pupil must work over three terms in year 10 and 11 (at least one term must be in year 11) and achieve all Compact goals.

When pupils achieve their Compact goals and certificates, they should record these in their personal records.

Goal

Attendance

The pupil must be in school or participating in approved school activities for at least 95% of the time.

A pupil's holiday in term-time with parents and/or a long stay in hospital or sick at home should not count against attendance.

Punctuality

The pupil should be punctual 95% of the time.

Punctuality should be checked at morning and afternoon registration.

Completion of coursework

All coursework should be handed in by the required date in four subjects out of five, five out of six, etc.

The goal is restricted to the coursework required by external examination boards.

Achievement in English, maths and science

This goal should be awarded if the pupil has made progress since taking Standard Attainment Tests at the end of year 9.

"Progress" is defined as reaching a higher level of skill, knowledge and understanding.

Work experience

The pupil is asked to complete satisfactorily at least one week's work experience. The experience should be validated by the employer where possible.

If for some reason the experience can not be undertaken, the pupil may still become a Compact graduate through achieving all other goals.

Key skills

Communication skills

In dealing with others, the pupil is able to ask and answer questions about themselves and the work they are doing, read instructions and write simple notes.

To meet the goal in key skills, the pupil must achieve each of the five skills relative to their individual potential as judged by staff.

IT skills

The pupil is able to enter, modify and reproduce information using a computer.

Personal skills

The pupil has a positive attitude to work.

Numeracy skills

The pupil has the ability to measure, add, subtract, divide and multiply and also to calculate using percentages.

Problem solving skills

The pupil can recognise problems and demonstrate a systematic approach to their solution.

Personal record

Completion of personal record

During years 10 and 11, the pupil should start, develop and complete their "personal record" to a satisfactory standard.

The "satisfactory" nature of the document should be judged against the following

  • Has the pupil made a personal statement?
  • Have certificates of achievement been included?
  • Has the child shown commitment?
